Gas is a fossil fuel – not “low carbon”

by antonyhook

Ahead of tomorrow (31 May)’s meeting of members states’ ministers at Europe’s Competitiveness Council, Antony Hook has expressed concern at indications that the Horizon 2020 Report will glass natural gas as a “low carbon” energy source.

Gas is cleaner than coal but is still a fossil fuel, in 2004 it added over 5 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere and natural gas itself is a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide.

The Horizn 2020 report is abaout allocating money to research future energy sources.  It would be wrong to define gas as “low carbon” and therefore open the way for this established fossil fuel industry to be awared Horizon money.

We need research into developing actual green sources of energy- solar, wind, tidal, among others.

As Graham Watson MEP has has, the gas industry makes profits of €140 billion per year.  They can fund there own research without access to public funds via Horizon.
